A Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is an integrated system designed to purify raw water from various sources such as rivers, lakes, borewells, or industrial wastewater, making it suitable for domestic, commercial, or industrial use. The treatment process involves multiple stages that remove suspended solids, dissolved impurities, microorganisms, and chemical contaminants to meet desired water quality standards.
Raw Water Intake System:
The process begins with the collection of raw water through pumps or gravity flow systems equipped with coarse screens to remove large debris and floating particles.
Coagulation and Flocculation Unit:
Chemicals like alum or poly-electrolytes are added to destabilize suspended particles, allowing them to clump together into larger aggregates (flocs) for easier removal.
Sedimentation Tank:
In this stage, the flocculated water is allowed to settle under gravity, separating heavier particles from the clarified water.
Filtration System:
The clarified water passes through multi-media filters or pressure sand filters to remove remaining fine particles and turbidity. Activated carbon filters may also be used to eliminate odor, color, and organic impurities.
Disinfection Unit:
Chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) treatment, or ozonation ensures complete destruction of harmful bacteria, viruses, and pathogens, making the water microbiologically safe.
pH Correction and Chemical Dosing:
pH adjusters and corrosion inhibitors are added to maintain optimal water chemistry suitable for the intended application.
Storage and Distribution System:
Treated water is stored in clean water tanks and distributed through pipelines or pumps for industrial, municipal, or commercial use.
